Welcome to May's edition of Vibrations. It's been a few months since the January mix and I wanted to update my friends some great new trance tracks. While some of these have broken the mainstream horizon, many of these chill trance tracks are hidden gems equating into a nice chill/summer mix.

The inspiration behind this volume stemmed from vibrations vol. 7-9...they had a chill yet respectable trance sound. These sound elements are ones I enjoy the best. While sounding amazing, they stray the course of mainstream trance, leaving an impression and enjoyable taste you keep coming back to time and time again.

The ending tracks spell out my favorite moments in this mix. The subtleness never leaves you wanting more; it satiates the soul.

Well well well...Here I am again. 2010 has kicked us off with some awesome tracks feature some awesome artists.

The mix settles well for both the more aggressive-style trance listeners, but half way through it appeals to the progressive as well. Finally, the last two tracks a bit of a techy sound, but never lose sight of the trance experience. The last track by Tiesto is one of my all time favs. Mixing is top notch, just for you.

Oh, by the way, why did I add the months to the mix name now? o.O I dont know....

EP Album on Kahvi: Bendii Syndrome

I really felt like my last post didn't do justice for the kind of enthusiasm I wanted to display for my EP released on Kahvi. For you Kahvi fans, I released a 4-Track Kahvi EP that really had some positive feedback from the loyal customers there. Those responses really encouraged me to continue looking into music production.

With that said, I've currently working on another 4-track EP that will be released on Kahvi's EP timetable.

Back to the album! I really felt Bendii Syndrom hit a well scored note (no pun intended) to Kahvi listeners as much of the releases were bionic bunny style weird-hypnotic tracks. I do go for those kinds of tracks, but I really think for that kind of arena, people want subtly, simplicity, and emotional components attached to their music. I think those elements, when blended, produce an effect that makes you feel good.

I don't always think about these things, and to quantify music in such ways should be blasphemous in most cases. None the less, the tracks I created hit a chord with me, I hope they do with you as well. Much of the inspiration from the tracks came from trancey chillout, workbench (Kahvi releases) and Boards of Canada.

Loss of Grandios is by far (in my opinion) the best track of the EP. While repetitive, it follows the style of Boards of Canada but also has its own style of communicating its intent.

Snooping for berries is a fun and intrinsic style that makes me think of some dog, snooping around the garden for a quick treat. Don't ask me why, but thats just the illusion that I get when I listen to this.

Last Goodbyes are one of those Squaresoft-cum-Chronotrigger-cum-FinalFantasy tracks that just kind of sit with you when you've listened to it enough. Piano and pad swells make this track a swirling pool of emotion.

Starstruck is exactly what the name implies, BOOM. The start up is slow and somewhat unimpressive. But mid-point through the track, sounds begin to fill your speakers and the result is a conglomerate of chorded violence with a sense of subtlety (yes I can use that word twice).

As for timely releases of my Mixes, I really do have apologize. I always end up with the shorter end of the stick when it comes to a commitment with you guys. Money definitely is not the issue but rather the time associated with making mixes. With a full-time job now (System's analyst) and a full-time student, things often get lost in the mix of it all (once again, no pun intended). I'm currently looking at purchasing tracks for another vibrations mix coming up soon. So stay tuned.

Kahvi Release #273: Bendii Syndrom by Polaski

So for you Kahvi fans out there, I've finally made it to the cream of the crop and have an EP listed on kahvi's own site titled Bendii Syndrome. This luscious set of individual tracks lay out sequences of sounds that are both strange and common to the avid EDM listener. None the less, they are worth checking out and they are free (If you'd like a .FLAC copy, you can donate $2 to paypal).

The very best and final Kahvi Mix release is days away

I've been holding out. I must apologize. It's been awhile since a kahvi release and for good reason: I've exhausted all the useable tracks in the kahvi collective for mixing. But I have one left. The VERY BEST chill, emotional, down-to-earth, seamless, tear-jerking, and capstone mix out of the entire collection of mixes. It's been in holding for almost 1 and a half years.

It's coming this week.

Vibration Breaks Vol. 02 (Trance + BREAKS...sort of)

Thanks to the generousity of many, I've decided to whip out another specialty mix I've been wanting to do for the last half-a-year: Progressive Breakbeat. Thats right, breakbeat but with a Progressive Trance style to it. Unbeknownst to me, there are actually more progressive break tracks out there than not and I was delighted to get my fingers on both vinyls and mp3s.

Vibration Breaks Vol. 2 carries the vibration name of solid mixing and great track selection. I don't take it lightly. I want people to know that if there is a Vibrations name to my mixes you're getting good stuff. I can't promise it, but I hope you do have some expectations. None the less this mix is chocked full of some great music. I'm serious!

If you've known me for awhile you know that out of all my mixes my favorite is the progressive/tech/trannce mix called "The Undiscovered Country". It's bar-none the best mix I've made in terms of mixing and track selection (and it was my third released mix since I started). In Vibration Breaks Vol. 2 I hold the very same feeling. This is a great mix...I love listening to it over and over again. Very few mixes I make have that sensation to it. I want to pass it on to you to show my appreciation towards you and the amazing artists that have supplied such great music!

If you're not into break beat, I hope this mix will change your mind. If you like Progressive Trance, then this is for you! I've managed to cram 15 tracks of great sounding, liquid-style progressive trance breaks. It's sooo goooey and warm on the inside. There are momenets of joy, jubliation, happiness, excitement, and chill! Top that with a swirl of seamless mixing and you have a concoction of pure emotion. I cannot completely convey how much I love this mix. I really cannot. The tracks really make this mix GREAT! I say this in hopes that you understand that I'm not boasting about my own ability to make the mix good...it's all about the artists.

Vibrations Vol. 10

Yes, this edition of the vibrations series not only hits it's 10th volume, but offers a difference from the previous 4. Trance in its boldness reaches out from the grave and grabs you by the ears (literally) and takes you for a spin (LITERALLY!). There are hints of progressiveness, but the overall theme is Trance. Oh yeah, did I mention there's vocals too? Too many tracks to count that have them!

The 3 tracks of the mix start progressive building up the mix. Then I do a few dazzling tricks with the tracks, mash them up and let them fly. Dj Polaski - Vibrations Vol. 9

When all of you lost hope, and my incesant lies about bringing mixes has been the forefront for the last two to three months I have finally delivered. Yes, delivered another Vibrations Mix for all of you to enjoy.

The last two vibration mixes have been, as I believe them to be, the height of my mixing talent and most of you who like to be vocal tend to agree. However, this Vibrations mix covers a slightly different angle to the Trance and Progressive House scene. Vibrations Vol. 9 doesn't stay consistant with one style of trance and house (as heard in Vibrations 7/8) rather its a mix mash of harder and softer sounds clashing into a wonderful mix. The mixing style is a bit more rigid and less consistent, however, this only heightens the overall pleasurability of the mix.

The mix starts off with a Sasha-style progressive house tracks which leaves you a tad-bit thirsty for some juicy melodic trance - although not for too long. The mix takes a dip and calms your senses but towards the middle picks right back up with a series of hard-er trance choons (choons!). From there on its smooth, driveable, gliding progressive trance which shares remnants of those previous Vibrations mixes you love.

Also, its my yearly annual donation drive. If you feel compelled to continue financial my mixing operations it would be fantastic. While most of the mixes I make come out of my own pocket, some of you have been nice enough to lend your hard-earned cash to help replicate new mixes. So I know I've been absent in posting lately and practically lying to you when I said I would release a bunch of content but never did. I've also felt like I've been making alot of excuses for the latency but I have to tell you that things get worse. My super-uber-PC blew up not to long ago. Apparently the power supply (corsair) went belly up and I am waiting for a RMA to come in the mail in the next few weeks. In the meantime I dont have much to offer.

However, the good news I left a little present for those IDM/Kahvi lovers. Over the past year I've been tinkering around with music production as a hobby. As a result I've been working to create sounds but never really any full length pieces of music. The Digital shorts (all mounted in a nice .zip file) is all the products of my sound creation. It's a combination of Reason 4.0 synths/filters/etc and fruity loops 8. All the "short" tracks were created by me as well as their respective sounds.

None of the tracks are complete, but like I said that wasn't my intention. Some last anywhere from 40 seconds to 4 minutes. Some I wanted to complete as full length songs, but I always failed in completing them due to writers block (hah!). Use them as you like, just credit the individual for the idea...me.

Polaski - Life After Death (Beta Chill Remix)

For some time, I've been practicing some music techniques, creating new sounds and developing rhythems (for fun), and I eventually concluded a 4 minute song featuring what I've been doing. Life After Death is a subtle chill focusing simply on syntaxual rhythem. There's no advanced stuff here; but I'm not disappointed. The melodies are simple and flow well. I'm not sure if I'm quite done with the song, thats why I called it a beta mix.

I just want to go on the record in saying that these individuals have encouraged my musical growth. However, they always said to stick to what I've been good at: djing.

Issues

So, the last few posts, I lied about releasing stuff in november. I've had a few run-ins with car issues the last few weeks totally wrecking my back account (I was down $1200 in two weeks). Right now, I'm in recovery mode just trying to recoop my savings. In the meantime, I still can deliver two trance mixes, but concerning anything else, its a no go.

Kahvi-Set: Walk With Me mixed by Dj Polaski

Wanted to throw out a new kahvi mix for everyone's enjoyment: Walk With Me. This kahvi-set was done in conjunction with the popular "Cup of Kahvi" mix presented a few months back. Like most of my mixes, this one goes through cycles of slow-fast-slow. The beginning tracks, I feel, are the premier focal point of the mix. Things tend to heat up in the middle, and then rest at the end of the mix. If you sincerely enjoyed my kahvi mixes in the past, you'll no doubt enjoy this one as well.

November Mix Itinerary

This month for november is going to be exciting, as there is something for everyone :).

I'm expanding my genre base to include drum & bass. Stay tuned for an amazing mix feeling some liquid melodic D&B. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it.

Also, a new kahvi mix will be released at the beginning of november. This mix was a complement to "Cup of Kahvi" mix set because they were created at the same time. For those who enjoy the kahvi-sets, you'll definitely won't want to miss this.

Also this december, I'm trying to get some strength to finish a tranceaction mix and a sub-lime chill-tech-trance mix, but I'm running out of good tracks.

I am for sure there will be 4 more mixes by the end of this year. Stay tuned.

Well friends, its that time again where another Vibrations mix graces this planet for the first time. And to think, every one of you reading this has the chance to listen to it....for free! No gimmicks!

Lets get to the good stuff, stated previously, I really tried to take remnants from Tiesto's ISOS7 cd and try to incorporate that style into my mix. While I feel I failed in that area, I've also gained...The mix itself is wonderful. It's not the high-energy trance all those new hip kids are listening to, its very progressive, and very groove. I like the fact that most of its sounds are not overly-pitched and whining, but just right to the touch...or sense...or whatever. The more I listen to it, the more I feel it sounds like one of AvB's ISOT cd's, but I'm trying not to draw comparisons. I took a different turn in mixing this time as I went for a more beat-smooth transition rather than melody. You'll notice it because most of the tracks do not end on the same key, which I think keeps the mix entertaining and doesn't feel like its dragging on. A lot of the tracks themselves are low-key artists in a sense that they really aren't super popular but yet pump out really good tracks. I love going for these tracks as they excrete a certain kind of originality in sound that alot of uber-popular trance artists tend NOT to follow.

Anyways, this mix marks the second year of my mixing hobby as I remember starting in August of 2006 with Tranceaction 1, hosting my mixes off of Dj Doboy's website, then eventually moving on to Vibrations 1 on DI.FM (which really got me started), and eventually into the Kahvi mixes. Wanted to thank those who supported me finacially, emotionally, and kept me busy making mixes.

Real quick:

I noticed something while releasing my mix on a few other forums sites. I'm kind of concerned about some of these djs who throw out 5-10 mixes a month in hope that quantity over quality will prevail. I know this isn't true because I take a quick peek at these mixes and its a jumble of half-hashed train wrecks and mix-matched tracks that provide no flow. Now, I'm not going to name names, however, I can focus on myself. While I have the means to throw out 2-3 mixes a month (at the expense of the clothes off my back) I feel that quality prevails over quantity, which is why I try to bring you mixes that are superb from the get go; one's that you can play over and over again and cherish. Bottom line is, I'm dedicated to mixing QUALITY mixes each and everytime, and how often I bring them to you is a burden on my mind, but not a qualification as a DJ. So what do I define as quality? Well, I can't answer that, you're the listener, I'll let you make up your own mind.

o.O??? Vibrations Vol. 8 this weekend....whaha!?!

I'm a little antsy about this new release for the vibrations series. It's one of the best culminations of tracks I've laced together in a long time. Granted, I've said that quite a few times about a few other vibration mixes, I feel eloquently soothe about this one. If I could have held back on this and sold it to you for a price, I would have, but I'm in the business of giving these things away to you for free as I scrounge around my pocket book for extra change to purchase these lovely tracks.

Anyways, Vibrations Vol. 8 will be released this weekend. I'll save the details for the mix release, but you'll want to stay on top of the blog posts to make sure you get it.

The theme consists of all 3 trance genres, Trance, Prog-Trance, Vocal Trance. However the main theme is prog, I was primarily inspired by Tiesto's ISOS7 cd, but felt compelled to add my own juice to the smoothie. The tracks are soft, juicy, bouncy, growing, and harmonious. The ending is most impressive to me as a dj.

Upcoming mixes

Hey guys, its been awhile since my previous blog post but I wanted to keep you up to date on some of the things I've been working at.

First and foremost, you can expect 5-6 new mixes over these next few months. The mixes range from trance to chill trance to kahvi mixes and breakbeat. Currently, I'm in the progress of finishing two trance mixes (chill/regular) that will be out soon.

Second, I'd like some input as to what genre's you guys like to hear. I know I have various crowds (Kahvi vs. Trance) but it would be nice to know what you think.

Lastly, I wanted to thank some of you who donated money to help the cause. I wanted to reassure you that all of your dollars go directly into purchasing new tracks and making new mixes. It's not easy being a college student and being broke 105% of the time. While I make it effort to release mixes regardless of donations, receiving them helps me put more out for you guys. Dj Polaski - Cup of Khavi (Kahvi Summer Mix)

Hey guys! I'm proud to announce a new kahvi mix today. Cup of Kahvi offers some premier kahvi tracks that are undeniably scrumptious. IF you have a heart for my previous kahvi mixes you'll REALLY enjoy this one.

The first three tracks really start the mix off strong with various sounds loops and amazing melodies. Slem starts us off accompanied by Brioskj and Scann Tec's wicked guitar lick. Then the mix drops and goes a little lighter with Nags and DMB's ghostmachine (a favorite of mine). As if DMB's track wasnt any lighter the mix takes a turn picks up speed with tracks from Dalekk, Tai, and URL. But before it gets too fast, Randomajestiq puts on the breaks slows us down with some awesome grooves and from there it starts to plateau off into a nice grooving set of drum loops, ethereal bouncing sounds. In the end, I do a little 7-8 minute mix recap feature the highlights of some of the songs in the mix; all mixed to Madstyle's loop on track.

You guy will definitely want to experience this rollercoaster.

Tranceaction Vol. 9 (Unreleased!)

So, there has been alot of activity on my blog lately, which might suggest that my dj hiatus is drawing to an end. That is partially true, I still have a week to go before august kicks in but I thought I might re-introduce the Tranceaction series. Volume 9 has some very special mixing techniques. I did alot of track cuts ups and merging in here to make it more fluent. Also by cutting them up, It shortens the length of the tracks to an average of 4-5 minutes. I noticed that alot of listeners to like tracks that draw out too long. Personally, I feel the same.

I made a little catch for you guys to encourage you "facebook-ers" to join my fan page. This tranceaction series mix will ONLY BE RELEASED ON MY FACEBOOK FAN PAGE. I know some of you might get mad at a stunt like that, but I hope it might get some of you to join. So without trying to glorify myself I made a fan page on facebook. You don't need any applications to do it, its build right into facebook. Just go to your search bar (that you would normally find friends in) and type "Dj Polaski" exactly as you see it, but without the quotes. That should direct you to the page in which you can join.

The whole point of the fan page is to facilitate a medium in which I can electronically communicate with you. In other words (lol), it allows me to get to know who you are (and stalk you...no no only joking). I like to be able to talk with people who enjoy the same kind of music as I do, it makes it very interesting. It also allows me to gear my mixes for you guys by understanding your interests in electronic music.

So, I finally wanted to try a new mix in a genre I havent done before. Looking through the large repository of electronic genres (and there are alot) I noticed one specific genre that I always enjoyed listening to when I needed an energy rush: Breakbeat. Breakbeat has its own special unique rhythm. The mixmash of beats, hi-hats, drum loops, and bass sequences offer a difference sound than Trance. After searching for the sounds I wanted, I finally concluded 12 tracks into a seamless mix for your enjoyable pleasure.

BreakBox delivers on so many levels. Whether you're a trance listener, a prog listener, or a clubber, I've got this mix appealing to everyone. The first portion of this mix is essential club/electro breakbeat stuff. Great loops, great bass, and some great vocals that can get any floor hopping. Towards the end of the mix, you'll start to hear a more trance/progressive mood as I take it down a notch and let your mind take a break. You'll definitely want to pick up this mix, its worth a listen.

Kahvi Sound Sessions 006 Special Mix Edition

For week 6 of the kahvi sound sessions I have prepared a little preasent for everyone to enjoy: A full 60 minute mix! Featuring some very soothing sounds this round will offer some complex beats matched with some ethreal pleasures. The mix starts off with Alkor's awesome ambient track "The Background" and ends with Jasinski's downtempo/minimal track "Single file lines". Me vs. deadmau5

Don't let the title fool you. There isn't any musical collaboration going on here. No, but there definitely was SOME collaboration. Awhile ago, I heard of a little mixup between deadmau5 and Marcus Schissow (a trance producer/dj). Apparently, Schissow and a few other big-shot Djs/producers came up with a mock artist named "Deadrat6". The point was to poke fun of deadmau5 because all...and I mean all...of his tracks sound the same. Go ahead and sample some of his bigger tracks. They all have the same "bad loop". None the less. Come to find out that Schissow and mau5 were to dj together at an event, and deadmau5 had no clue he was opening for Schissow in Oslo (or visa versa, it doesn't matter). Come to find out (3 days before the gig) that deadmau5 hated Schissow so much for "deadrat6" that he wouldn't allow Schissow to play at the club. None the less, Schissow had to sit that gig out after he had made arrangements and everything.

Well here comes the juicy part. I was pissed when I heard this. I never liked deadmau5 (except his Jaded track). He's a punk/retart child who messes around on ableton live until he finds a good sound and then repeats it for the next 1000 tracks he produces. Anyways I left him a message on myspace [NOTE** I wrote this before I talked to him -- keep reading **]:

Hey deadmau5,

Wanted to pitch an e-mail out to you to let you know that practically every track you ever made is a total rehash of the other. Granted, you've probably heard this a million times, I just thought I'd be a million and one. Seriously man, you can stack all your tracks at one time, and they would sound the same! Your beat loops...same. Synths...same. Dj talent...none. Bottom line is you suck. I mean literally, your stuff is horrible. Plus, are you so insecure with yourself that you have to go hide in a mouse suit on stage? The gag isn't even funny any more, it was old the first time around. Not to mention that bullshit you played on Marcus, who the hell do you think you are? Your mixing is train wrecks anyways. I will never, EVER, EVER...play any of your tracks again. Nor would I recommend them to anyone.

Take it easy pal.

Well, after this, he attempted to try and make fun of me by mass sending this message to everyone on the deadmau5 mailing list. Which was what I hoped for. Then I PMed him back, and asked for a private one on one conversation. We talked for about an hour or so, and I regretted some of the things I said. His argument was that he was in the business entertainment industry and that the demands on him to make music is enormous. I don't doubt that at all. All he wants to do is just make music and get it out there. But there's nasty competition. If deadmau5 wants to make music he likes, thats cool. I understand that now, even from a beginning artist perspective. But there is one thing I pointed out. Once you make it big like that, the ideas you create, the songs you make, the tracks you publish dont become yours anymore. They are a public thing.

There is an old business ideology developed by Kenneth Galbraith. He says that wants are created by those that manufacturer them. For example, deadmau5 creates a track, people LOVE it, and he keeps producing good tracks. Once he produces a "less desirable" track, people get mad at him for not living up to his standard (same thing with dj tiesto and In Search of Sunrise 5). Deadmau5 makes the defense that he can create what ever he desires. He likes making the music that I (and others) consider monotonous. Thats fine, I concede to that point. But you can't make it a defense, simultaneously, that you're in the business entertainment industry, and you're just pumping out tracks to cover demand. You can't mount one up on the other Granted I'm not speaking from experience, but I've seen and read examples like this. If its true that deadmau5 is putting up tracks just to meet demand and pressure and as a result he uses rehashed sounds and beat loops, then I pity him. I feel bad that he's in a position where he has to do that. If he creates the music because he loves to make that "sound" that we all consider monotonous then thats great, he found his own piece of mind in doing that -- it makes him happy. But deadmau5, you can't have both. They are contradictory.

Now I feel bad for the message I sent, it was a little out of line, but I still feel angry at him. I think there is a lesson on both sides of the line. deadmau5 needs to understand he has fans. I think when you get that big you have an obligation to them. I believe that whole heartedly, so I am going to say it again for clarity. When you get as big as deadmau5, you have an obligation to your fans. I don't think he was living up to that obligation. Rehashed songs are not worth it. His claim that he is in the business entertainment industry doesn't help him either. It shows that he isn't here for music...just show...just making a profit. I don't have a problem with artists making a profit off their work, but when profit is the driving force I think there is a conflict of interest. Much of the deadmau5 haters feel that he's just pushing out tracks to make a quick buck; I can sure see that viewpoint. But like I said, if thats all deadmau5 wants to make, then power to him, I don't have a problem with that.

Welcome to week number 5 in the kahvi sound session series. For this week we offer some goodies at both the beat/glitch and the ambient realms. Starting us off is Slem, with a nice touch of bionic sounding synths met with a creative drum loop. Esem and Audio Cephlon continue this phase until Stuart Elliot puts on the breaks. Acrillic Colors joins in at the end in one of my favorite tracks titled, Ununquadium Rarefaction. Hope you enjoy this.

If you've been reading you know that I have some bad news. Awhile ago, my computer blew and all of its contents (excluding one harddrive) literally went up in flames. So I'm making a huge effort to build a new computer. This donation drive is STRICLY for that cause, and that cause ONLY. All the money that I put forth towards developing mixes and mashups and buying tracks, equipment and sound editing programs come out of my own pocket. So if you like what you hear, feel free to donate. Here's how:

My ultimate goal is $160. So now is the time that I would like to announce the coming of three new mixes for everyone's pleasure.

1) A special new mix/album using tracks from one of my favorite IDM artists: General Fuzz

2) Brand Spankin' new Vibrations Vol. 7 Mix which will be released after it hits DI.FM radio

3) An old, unreleased LIVE mix, Tranceaction Vol. 8.

The first mix, between me and General Fuzz, has been a month long collaboration in developing a mix album featuring all general fuzz albums. If you liked the Searching for Planets kahvi mix, then you'll like this one.

The second mix, Vibrations volume 7, is a brand spankin' new trance mix I've conjured up over this last week. The mix features all new Trance tracks and remixes released just within the last week or so (two tracks released within the last two months). The mix has been sent into DI.FM and should be seeing another post shortly about the time/date it will be airing on the Trance channel.

The third and final mix is Tranceaction Vol. 8. For those who don't know the Tranceaction series, they were my first series when I just started mixing. Vol. 8 features live mixing via turntables and actually was unreleased because I was too busy to release it! It features some unheard tracks that were released about a year ago that still haven't hit mainstream yet, but are still Trance to the core.

While I haven't released any of the mixes yet, keep reading, each mix will be released at different times and will have its own individual post, so keep an eye out and RSS this blog.

News mixes, with some bad news later

Well, I've finally put some finishing touches on three new mixed albums. One featuring a highly favored artist, General Fuzz and two kahvi mixes (one done awhile back, but just touching up some finer points of the mix). While you most likely will not see these things on the internet for the next two months, I have plans on getting in-touch with Mr. Mendia (the guy i mentioned from monographic) to help me out with generating some interest. I'd also like to get my hands on his track database and do some mixes. While I will stay close to kahvi, I think doing album mixes across the full spectrum of netlabels will be very interesting, and having monographic's name to it will help alot. The trick will be identifying netlabels and actually getting quality tracks to mix. However, with the rising number of netlabels on the net and the amount of releases they do a month, I could about a mix per month.

I also have some bad news (involves exploding equipment and loss of data). I'll inform you guys on my next post.

Rhapsody

I was going through some of my old mixes and came across my first public mix titled "Rhapsody". The mix was a demonstration of my mixing skills for Nik, who runs the Kahvi label. The very first unreleased kahvi mix (titled kahvi-mix 001) was a overly-hashed mix of weird kahvi tracks that didn't have much consistency. I wasn't pleased with it, I just did it for fun. Back to the story, nik gave 001 a listen and was pleased with it (believe it or not!). He asked me to do another mix with releases covering 150 and above. I was delighted he wanted another. Well, within a month Rhapsody (kahvi-mix 002) was born, and I still believe it to be the best kahvi mix I made to date (in-fact the best mix period in my opinion). Nik gave it a listen, loved it, and then released on the label. I soon became Kahvi's designated mixer and well, the rest is internet history. Out of all of the mixes, Rhapsody has the best mixing, transition, interplay, mashups, and tracklisting of them all, despite what others say about it. 21st Birthday

So it is my 21st birthday today and I must admit, it's been pleasent. To start this sunday, I ate some breakfast and watched Norbit for the first time. It was hilarious. I tend to enjoy black comedy every once in a while. Now I'm gearing up for the Packers game (I believe they have a real chance to make it to the super bowl). The whole day has been sitting in my bed watching T.V., and I'm enjoying it.

Since this blog is about djing and music I thought I might say something about it. To start, me and an artist (the artist I've been ranting about for the last month) are getting together and are working on something together. Can't get into too much information.

I also watched The Good the Bad and The Ugly friday night and I was enthused by the level of musical composition that the motion picture. The composer Ennio Morricone developed the most beautiful music in a movie I've heard in a VERY, VERY long time. The man is a genious. His works are way ahead of its time. I compared the music to other 60 movies, and it's just not the same. It's emotional, independent sounding using various sounds and weird instruments. I even took it upon myself to go into Reason and try to replicate one of his works, and it doesn't sound that bad. No I wont share with you, I wouldn't embarass myself like that, but it would be cool if someone like Boelex or Fuzz tried a downtempo/contemporary remix of these tracks.

After a request from a lady fan of mine I reinstated the Nostalgia mix for her and everyone else, you can click on the new link to the left called "Mix Archives" and it will take you to a blog post that has a list of my released mixes.

In addition, I'm introducing a mix I did a while back called Telecommunicate Vol. 2. It's a 70 minute set with over 25 tracks. I wanted to do an Armin Van Buuren Yearmix thing, but that takes alot of talent, and it isn't easy to do. I usually have some left over tracks/vinyls/mp3s that I don't use in my mixes (usually remixes of songs that I have used) and I make a super huge mix with tracks lasting only 1-3 minutes. It was fun to do, you'll enjoy listening to it.

New Mix Completed: Lightmare

Put the finishing touches on a new Kahvi mix (#006) titled Lightmare. I cannot go into specifics on the tracklisting but in my opinion, this is the most professional sounding mix to date. General Fuzz comes back to visit with two of his tracks and I'm happy. He's been dead center on my radar for releases in the past month, a true electronic pioneer. I'd watch this guy, he's definitely going to make it big. Anyways, the mix takes a unexpected turn as it is geared towards a slower, chill-outish style. You won't hear any super-glitched tracks upbeat sounds, its very mellow and smooth. I've been so blessed to be able to mix these "albums", its so much fun to watch as they propegate out into the internet. More-so, its amazing when artists themselves love to listen to their own songs on my mixes and then comment on them. Lightmare is like nothing I've done before, but that can be taken lightly because no two kahvi-mixes sound the same, nor are they mixed in the same style. I like it that way

I was delighted to know how popular Parallax (kahvi mix #003) has become. When I produced it (nearly 9 months ago) it sat on the side waiting for kahvi to release. Nik, who owns Kahvi, was really impressed with the work. To my surprise, he gave the mix to an online netaudio site called inq-mag which started its own netaudio/podcast release titled "monographic". Monographic captures different releases over the all the popular netlabels (kahvi, monotonik, etc) and puts them on a podcast which generates alot of attention (I MEAN ALOT). Parallax was monographic #001 (thats right, I was the first release on monographic!) To some degree, it generated alot of responses. In fact netdecks was even kind enough to give it a great review (netdecks reviews netlabel releases). Here is what Tobias Fischer from Netdecks had to say about Parallax:

"Next to producing distinct and adventurous techno music, Mikel Mendia is also the man behind the INQ Mag, an online publication dedicated to the netaudio world. As of now, it not only serves as an information source on the latest releases and news from the scene, but also acts as a place for concentrated listening. Mendia has joined forces with the Kahvi Collective and asked DJ Polaski to remix a selection of the Collective’s tunes into a coherent, smoothly flowing mix entitled “monographic #1”. Polaski has certainly spent the time necessary to browse the vast Kahvi archive (which totals a staggering 800 track) well. His mix begins infinitely relaxed and anthemic, with lots of intricate hiphop beats, snippeted loops, sacral chords and ambient spaces, then enters an industrial wasteland filled with growling basses and solitary piano splinters, before returning to more consiliatory sounds again. Rating: Planet Boelex - Only Slighly Distant (mtk163)

Every so often I come across certain tracks that have an emotional impact on me. I was recently browsing the monotonik netlabel archives and came across a release by Planet Boelex. Stated in my previous blog posts, I've became quite fond of the work he's produced this last year, and the track, titled Only Slight Distant, is no exception. Before I even beginning rating this track, it's important to show you my scale (rated 1-10) on how I rate tracks.

9: All-Time Favorite
8: Excellent
7: Petty Good
6: Nice Listen
5: Average
4: Nothing Spectacular
3: Boring
2: Bad; Didn't finish
1: Deleted

Now, in order to get anything above an 8, you must be pretty damn good. The ranking of 10 is Pure. Stated in my mission, I am looking for the purest sound, by achieving a 10, that is the purest sound that I've ever heard. I rarely rate anything above an 8. IN fact, 3 Drives on a Vinyl - Greece 2000 (which is my favorite Trance song) only hits a 8 on the scale.

Anyways, Let's start off with this track. It was released on the monotonik label (mtk163). The beginning is very soothing, with bubbly sounds and light hits on the drums. But what happens after a minute or so is truly amazing. The melody begins to kick in and the bass accompanies it. I play this part over and over, and it only gets better. There is just an immense build-up of sound and you just feel overwhelmed with so much cohesion in the melody and bass line. After 3 minutes into it, the sound fades and a new melody and bass-line kicks in. If this was any ordinary song from an ordinary label, I would frown upon this, but considering Planet Boelex's style, and the kind of music this is geared for, this kind of technique isn't that far fetched. The second portion of the track is not as tantalizing as the first, but it still is pretty good. The leads on the track are once again bubbly, and you hear more defined pads, and a more textured bass line. There are some chorus parts that reflect the first portion of the track, which scores big with me. The song continues with a more defined drum line with funky loops and displaced hits. After 6 minutes together, the song fades and ends.

I really liked this track, made me feel good just listening to it. I definitely liked the first portion of it than the second. In fact, I almost wish that PB would have continued to use the same melody and bass line rather than switching it up half-way through, but I try not to comment much about how artists arrange their music. The melody was very well constructed, with an accompanying bass line and ethereal pads that generated a soothing sensation. I really enjoyed listening to this, it will most likely be an all-time favorite song for me.

RATING: 8, Excellent

Working on new mix

I can't divulge too much information, but works on a new Kahvi mix is in order. This next mix will largely be down tempo. I try to mix up the styles with each new mix. I believe this new one will be the most commercial sounding of them all. I'll keep you posted

Kahvi-Mix 005: Searching for Planets (kahvi#229)

This kahvi-mix, like all the others, features the talented artists on the Kahvi label (http://www.kahvi.org/). For about a year now, I've spent alot of time working on kahvi-released tracks producing mixes (even though I'd like to call them albums). The result of this work is what I consider to be my finest. This recent release on the kahvi label (kahvi#229) is one of three mixes released (a total of 5 mixes if you include unreleased mixes).

When I first started the preliminary work for this album, I was stumped on some of the tracks to use. I had such a vast spectrum of styles and BPMs it was difficult to set a "tone" for the album. None the less, with the work that Planet Boelex (kahvi#218) and General Fuzz (kahvi#216) created in "Suunta" and "Red Balloon" respectively, I was able to manage some really great transitions. Knowing Planet Boelex personally and faintly talking with General Fuzz through e-mail, I was able to get an inside look on some of their work, producing some inspiration. In fact, I was so inspired by their work, I used three tracks from Planet Boelex, and three tracks from General Fuzz. I give much credit to their work.

The mix also features some of my other favorite artists. While this is the first time I've featured Planet B and General F in any of my mixes, Madstyle, Keed pr1, Workbench, Alexey V, and Stud return with some great tracks that add awesome ambient/progressiveness tones. I'm very fond of Workbench, mostly all of his tracks either start at the beginning or end of my albums because of the sounds he use. They make great intro/ending tracks. Madstyle has a specific looping style/sound that is consistent with most of his tracks. When I did my first kahvi-mix (titled "Rhapsody", see back catalog), my favorite track was "Soundcascade". Alexey V has always surprised me. His progressive sounds leave me in awe, and I always look forward to his releases. Every kahvi mix I've produced has features Alevey V; he just fit so well. His recent release titled "dreamology" (kahvi#219) is very different from the rest of his stuff. It's slow, ambient, sensual, yet terrifying.

I also created a little story line to go along with the album. It allows you to kind of get a picture as I was developing the album. Actually, as I was going through the entire set, I was just thinking what it would be like to be in space, and so with each track, I created a little story-name that I thought fit the mood of the track.

The culmination of work in "Searching for Planets" is surprisingly good with ambient sounds, weird loops, and spacious ethereal melodies. You won't leave hungry after listening to this. In some cases you'll wonder when the next song will be only to find out you've already arrived past the transition. What I liked most of all about this was the warm welcome I got from Planet Boelex and General Fuzz. I enjoy hearing/reading listener's compliments, but when it comes from the Artists themselves, it means a whole lot more to me.

Vibrations Vol. 6 2CD Set

Well, like always, I try to make a Vibrations mix in between my vibration DI sessions and here it is, a two CD set. The first 70 minute mix is slow, with more complex sounds and progressive moods. There are definitely some killer transitions in this set, worth taking a listen to.

The second set is high-energy, almost hard-trance turn core in my opinion. The BPM sits at 143 (as oppose to 131 on the first cd). There are alot of breakdown points and special moments with vibrant sounds that we all know trance to have. For those loving the old 01-03 sounds, I think this will have special meaning, however anyone who loves Trance will find this pleasing (and fast!).

The first set was suppose to invoke a soft mood, the second will get you moving.

Thus I preserved my own blog name for the sake of making things easy for me and you when it comes to downloading my mixes.
